E-commerce platform Chynabazar to come into operation

Kathmandu, July 26

A new e-commerce platform, Chynabazar, is set to launch with the aim of providing Nepali consumers with quality products at fair and transparent prices by eliminating unnecessary intermediaries and additional mark-ups between manufacturers and customers.

The online marketplace will go live on Wednesday, July 29 and will operate independently of third-party sellers or import agents. It will operate under the domain name Chynabazar.com.

Imported goods in Nepal have traditionally reached consumers through multiple layers of the supply chain, including importers, wholesalers and distributors. This process has often led to higher prices and uncertainty in supply. Chynabazar has been established to bridge this gap, according to the company's CEO, Stuti Shrestha.

In a statement, the company said it will select products directly from manufacturers in China, purchase them outright, transport them to Nepal through its own logistics network, store them in its own warehouses and deliver them to customers using its own distribution system.

The company claims that managing the entire process, from sourcing and importing to warehousing and distribution, under a single system will help reduce delivery times, control costs and ensure transparent and competitive pricing. It also believes this model will enable it to provide reliable service even during fluctuations in the supply chain.

The company will initially offer electronic goods, fashion products, lifestyle items, and health and beauty products. The company said it plans to gradually expand its product range in the coming months.

Customers will be able to make digital payments through eSewa and Khalti. The company added that its own warehousing and distribution network will enable it to maintain adequate inventory levels while providing fast and reliable delivery services.

"Nepal's digital economy continues to expand, while trade relations with China are becoming increasingly stronger. Chynabazar aims to grow alongside both of these trends. We plan to diversify our product offerings and gradually expand our distribution network across the country," said Shrestha.

Indrive prepares women drivers

 Kathmandu, July 28

InDrive has completed the first cohort of its Driving Naari Nepal programme, with 10 women graduating after three months of training aimed at preparing them for professional two-wheeler driving.

In a programme organised in Kathmandu, the company awarded them with certificates after completing training launched in April 2026. The initiative was designed to help women from underserved communities access employment opportunities in the mobility sector and address barriers to entering the profession.

The training combined practical riding instruction with road safety education and support through the driving licence process. Each participant received a safety kit, including a helmet, first-aid kit and medical kit, the company said in a statement.

The programme also included self-defence training delivered in partnership with FightBack Nepal to help participants develop awareness and practical skills for personal safety.

Deputy Superintendent of Police of Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office Sunil Jung Shah said road safety was a shared responsibility.

'Road safety is a shared responsibility, and every driver has an important role to play. We encourage the participants to follow traffic rules, stay alert and continue learning as they gain experience on the road. We congratulate them and wish them a safe and successful journey as professional drivers,' he said.

According to inDrive, obtaining a driving licence provides women with greater access to employment, education, healthcare and other services by reducing dependence on public transport and family members for travel.

The company said two-wheeler ride-hailing services can reach narrow streets and last-mile destinations that are often inaccessible to four-wheeled vehicles, while providing passengers with more transport options.

The certification ceremony was attended by partner organisations, government representatives, media and invited guests. Participants received certificates, safety kits and commemorative gifts from inDrive representatives and the company's Nepal brand ambassador, Swastima Khadka.

One participant won an electric scooter, three received smartphones and six were awarded smartwatches to support their work as professional riders.

Communications Manager of the company Manjeeta Gurung said the programme sought to address both skills development and social barriers faced by women entering the profession.

'Skills training is only part of the work. Social stigma matters just as much, and so does the ecosystem a woman steps into once she starts riding,' she said. 'The programme is designed to support women through licensing, confidence-building and income opportunities while expanding transport choices for passengers.'

SC issues order to treat people respectfully at customs points

Kathmandu, May 16

The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an interim order against the government that the law enforcement officials must behave and cause others to behave respectfully towards every individual while implementing the customs-related rules at the Nepal-India border points.

Issuing the order on Friday, joint bench of justice duo Hari Prasad Phuyal and Tek Prasad Dhungana directed the Prime Minister's Office, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Finance and Department of Customs to ensure that the law enforcement official's behaviour is not against the right to live with dignity as mentioned in the Constitution.

The Ministry of Finance had issued a notice a year ago to implement the provision to impose customs duty on goods worth above Rs. 100. The Customs Department had begun strictly enforcing the rule from April this year.

The petitioners, advocates Amitesh Pandit, Suyogya Singh, Prashant Bikram Shah and Akash Mahato from DJ Law Associates, had demanded an interim order directing not to immediately implement or cause the implementation of the provision.

However, the SC did not clearly say anything for or against the government's decision to impose customs duties on goods worth above Rs. 100 brought to Nepal from India via land routes.

According to the order, except for controlling the transportation of goods for commercial purposes or the criminal offence of smuggling, lawful import of medicinal items related to an individual's health, items of minimal necessity used in social relations, and minimal commodities purchased for the personal use of local residents of the border area should be respected.

But the SC said clearly that imposing customs duty is a sovereign right of the government (State).

It stated that the validity, relevance, and appropriateness of the limit of Rs. 100 specified by the MoF by publishing a notice in the Nepal Gazette exercising the power conferred by the law, will be considered during the full hearing of the petition.

In their petition, the advocates had demanded appropriate orders including mandamus and prohibition not to create any hindrance or obstruction in bringing daily and monthly food supplies through the border checkpoints, to grant full exemption on any obstruction or duty on goods carried while travelling for marriage or visiting relatives, and to implement strict monitoring for smugglers.

Similarly, the petitioners argued that while individuals travelling by air are granted exemptions to bring one mobile phone handset, 25 grams of gold, and even a 32-inch television, and while at the Chinese Tibetan border points, exemptions are granted to bring goods through the checkpoints simply by verifying citizenship, it is evident that the government has discriminated people residing at the southern border.

Stating that the century old relations between Nepal and India has transformed the specific border regions into a distinct kind of Semi-Integrated Socio-Economic Zone, the petition maintained that for the people, the market across the border is of their own village, the hospital across the border is the health post of their own neighbourhood, and the relatives across the border are members of their own household.

NADA to implement MRP provisions on vehicles

Kathmandu, Apr. 22

NADA Automobiles Association of Nepal welcomed the provision requiring all imported goods sold in Nepal to clearly display the maximum retail price (MRP) and the mandatory issuance of invoice during sales.

A delegation from the Association met Director General Roshan Gyawali of the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection (DoCS) the other day to discuss a recently issued directives on affixing stickers indicating the MRP on automobile products.

During the meeting, the NADA delegation said the department’s press statement issued last week had drawn its attention.

Following a discussion with the Nepal Foreign Trade Association (NFTA), the DoCS had issued a statement on April 13 directing all importers to mention the MRP on imported goods and issue bills while selling them.

It also directed them to implement the provision within a 15-day period, and after that if any goods were sold without MRP, punitive measures would be adopted.

NADA's discussion with the DoCS was focused on how to make the provisions workable and implementable. The delegation raised concerns about the treatment of existing stock and questioned the practicality of requiring stickers to be affixed at customs points, read a statement from NADA. It also stated that it has consistently supported fair trade and transparency in business practices.

In response, Gyawali said the provisions were based on the existing Consumer Protection Act 2035 and aligned with the government’s 100-point governance reform plan, which prioritises their implementation. He said the department remains committed to enforcing the rules and described NADA’s concerns as constructive.

Gyawali added that the department is prepared to address practical challenges in implementation but emphasised that cooperation and commitment from businesses would be necessary.

He also stated that the department would take a strict approach towards manufacturers and importers in enforcing MRP labelling requirements, and invited NADA to propose legal reforms if existing provisions require amendment.

SY Panel begins installation of new UPVC plant

Kathmandu, Apr. 15

SY Panel Nepal, a subsidiary of SY Company Limited, has laid the foundation stone for a new UPVC industry in Ratnanagar Municipality–14, Pithuwa, in Chitwan.

The foundation was jointly laid on Monday by Ratnanagar Mayor Pralhad Sapkota and the company’s CEO Hong Sung-bu during a formal ceremony.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Sapkota said the municipality would facilitate investors willing to establish industries in the area. "While local authorities would provide necessary support, priority in employment should be given to local residents," he added.

Once operational, the plant is expected to produce UPVC door and window profiles and other construction materials using advanced technology. According to the company, UPVC products are considered a durable, lightweight and environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional wood and metal materials, and the decision to establish the factory was based on growing market demand in the country.

Hong said the factory represents a combination of Korean technology and Nepal’s workforce, adding that it would serve as a centre for industrial development. He said that the project would help strengthen economic cooperation between Korea and Nepal and contribute to the development of Chitwan.

He also noted that Nepal is entering a phase of political stability and economic opportunity, and said the company aims to support job creation and technology transfer in collaboration with the government.

The company recently issued an initial public offering (IPO), and said the funds raised are being utilised for the establishment of the uPVC plant. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 560 million.

The company aims to complete construction within six months and begin production thereafter. It expects that domestic production of such materials will reduce dependence on imports.

SY Panel Nepal has been producing panel products in Ratnanagar since 2017 and plans to expand its industrial presence and network.
