The
MinErgy Initiatives is all set to launch an initiative to use locally available
charcoal produced from forest waste instead of imported coal in the brick
kilns.
To
demonstrate the charcoal application in the brick kilns MinErgy organized an
event at Chhampi, Lalitpur the other day.
The
event was organized as part of its project named ‘Forest waste to energy:
bridging the gap between industrial energy demand and non-timber forest
products char supply’.
The
project is funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) under Small Grants
Program of the United Nations Development Programme.
“This
is an innovative project which aims to substitute 20 per cent imported coal in
brick kilns with locally produced charcoal from forest waste in community
forests,” read a press statement issued by MinErgy.
“Substitution
of coal with charcoal can reduce emissions of harmful pollutants such as
suspended particulate matters, sulfur-dioxide and carbon-dioxide.”
It
can contribute in reducing Nepal’s foreign currency expenditure, creating
employment and livelihood opportunities for poor and marginalized community
forest members, said the organization.
Nepal imports about 450,000 tons of coal worth
Rs. 10 billion just for firing bricks.
