Govt to use 'Nepali' instead of 'Nepalese' in all documents

Kathmandu, June 15:
The Ministry of Information and Communication (MoIC) has issued a circular to all government agencies, media houses, news agencies and journalists’ associations to use the word ‘Nepali’ while indicating the people or any other elements of Nepal.

Both the words ‘Nepali’ and ‘Nepalese’ were used interchangeably until now.
According to the ministry, the government had made the decision in order to bring uniformity in the language in all domestic documents and international treaties.

“This decision has been implemented to create uniformity in the language used in the Acts, rules and regulations, orders, directives and circulars issued by the government, and treaties, agreements, memoranda of understanding and other documents between the government and foreign entities,” reads the circular.

The use of ‘Nepali’ was proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and endorsed by the Cabinet a couple of weeks ago.
