Kathmandu, Nov. 6
President Ramchandra Paudel returned home
on Thursday after taking part in the Second World Summit for Social
Development, which concluded in Doha of Qatar.
He was received by Vice President Ramsahay
Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Sushila Karki, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal,
Ambassador of Qatar to Nepal Mishal M. Al Ansari, Foreign Secretary Amrit
Bahadur Rai, and heads of the security agencies at the Tribhuvan International
Airport.
At the invitation of the Amir of Qatar,
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, President Paudel left for Doha on Monday, leading
the Nepali delegation, including First Lady Sabita Paudel, to attend the
Summit.
He addressed the main session of the Summit
on Tuesday and delivered remarks at a high-level roundtable discussion on
strengthening the three pillars of social development — poverty eradication,
full and productive employment and decent work for all, and social inclusion,
the same evening.
On Tuesday, President Paudel met with UN
Secretary-General António Guterres. On Wednesday, he visited the Qatar National Museum, the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed in a statement.
The first World Summit for Social
Development was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1995. The summit discussed
issues such as inequalities in development, demographic imbalances, and the
impact of technology on society.
Since becoming a member of the United
Nations, Nepal has remained an active and committed member working for peace
and stability. Nepal currently chairs the UN Economic and Social Council.
Earlier, President Paudel and the Nepali
delegation were seen off by Nepal’s Ambassador to Qatar, Ramesh Chandra Paudel,
along with senior officials from Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the
Embassy of Nepal, at the Hamad International Airport in Doha.
