Kathmandu, Aug 9: Pratima Pande
has been appointed as the Honorary Consul General of Italy for Nepal .
Italian Consul General at
Kolkata Damiano Francovigh appointed Pande to the post amidst a programme on Tuesday.
She is president of Nepal
Britain Society, president of Trek O’Tel Hotel in Pokhara, director of
Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust, director of Alliance Francaise and one of
the founder members of Cultural Studies Nepal.
The daughter of first governor
of Nepal Rastra Bank Himalaya Shumshere Rana had received an honorary Member of
the British Empire (MBE), a prestigious award from the Queen Elizabeth II and
the British government, in 2009 for her contribution in enhancing Nepal-Britain
bilateral relations.
“I will do my best to take the
relations between Nepal and Italy to new
height. The consulate will be assisting Italian nationals residing here and
will also help Italian tourists visitng Nepal . It will also help to promote
bilateral, cultural, trade and tourism between Nepal
and Italy ,”
Pande said.
The Consul General Office has
been established in Heritage
Plaza in Kamaladi.
On the occasion, Italian
government awarded tourism entrepreneur Nima Nuru Sherpa with ‘Cavaliere Dell’
Ordine Della Stella d’ Italia’, a high order of Italy, for his contribution in
enhancing good relations between the two countries.
Francovigh conferred the award
to Sherpa on behalf of the Italian government.
“Sherpa has long been extending
cooperation to Italian nationals in Nepal . During the devastating
earthquake in April and May last year, he involved in rescuing Italian tourists,”
said Francovigh.
Sherpa said that the Italian
government has been collaborating in many projects in Nepal like trading, tourism and
cultural activities.
“It has been assisting students
in Makalu region with education materials. It
assisted Nepal
to build a hospital at Malekhu of Dhading to provide health services to the
victims of highway accidents,” he informed.
