Govt asked to reconstruct damaged structure

Kathmandu, Aug. 22: The Development Committee of the Legislature-Parliament Tuesday directed the government and concerned agencies to forge efficient collaboration among them to reconstruct the infrastructure damaged by the floods and landslides and resume public services.
“Floods damaged roads, bridges and other public infrastructure as well as private houses causing inconveniences to the people. As the local elections in Province 2 are scheduled for September 18 and major festivals are approaching soon, the government must make sure that all the damaged infrastructures are rebuilt and government services are resumed efficiently,” Committee Chairman Rabindra Adhikarisaid.
The Committee directed the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT), Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), the Department of Local Infrastructure Development and Agricultural Roads (DoLIDAR), the Department of Irrigation, Department of Water Induced Disaster Management and  the Department of Roads to forge collaboration and rehabilitate the damaged infrastructure immediately.
It also asked the government and the line ministries to develop alternative infrastructure in case the reconstruction of the damaged structureswasimpossible for the time being.
Adhikari said that the Ministry of Finance was directed to provide sufficient budget for the reconstruction of the damaged roads and other infrastructures.
“Since the country is prone to disasters like floods and landslides during the monsoon, the government should develop long-term policies to control the damages from floods and landsidesand minimize the loss of lives and property,” reads the decision of the Committee.
According to Adhikari, the government, MoPIT and MoHA were directed to submit a report on the loss caused by the floods and an integrated action plan on reconstruction of the flood-damaged structures.

Similarly, the Committee directed the MoPIT to study the geology and check the errors in the design while developing important infrastructure such as bridges.
