Kathmandu, Sept. 30
Minister for Foreign Affairs
Dr. Narayan Bahadur Khadkahas said that all political parties should come
together on the issues of national interest and foreign relations.
Talking to journalists
upon his arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport after attending the
United Nations 76th General Assembly, he stated that he planned to
move ahead by forging unity among the political parties to create a national
consensus on foreign policy promotion of national interest.
“The truth and
foundation of the foreign relations is national interest. If every political
party believes in different foreign policy and shows contention among themselves,
neighbouring countries will express higher concerns,” he said.
FM Dr. Khadka said
that the Prime Minster Sher Bhadur Deuba and Nepali delegation including him
and Foreign Secretary Bharat Raj Paudyal raised and highlighted Nepal’s agenda
at the UNGA.
Nepal has presented
its opinion on contemporary global issues, crisis created by the COVID-19
pandemic and its treatment, and easy and equitable access of all countries to
the vaccines against the virus and other medicines.
Likewise, climate
change, crisis faced by Himalayan nations and sustainable development are the
issues that also topped Nepal’s agenda at the global conference.
“We also presented
Nepal’s perspectives on the challenges of landlocked and least developed
countries (LLDCs), human rights, terrorism and disarmament at the UNGA,” said
the Minister.
He said that the UN
appreciated Nepal’s role in world peace, harmony and development.
Dr. Khadka also
informed that Nepal drew attention to the challenges of the LLDCs and stressed
on international cooperation, technology transfer and investment for the
development and alleviation of poverty and inequality in those countries.
He met Indian Minister
for External Affairs S. Jaishankar at the sideline meeting of the UNGA. It was
the first formal meeting between the two leaders. They had discussed the
matters of bilateral interest.
“Indian External
Minister has said that the issues between Nepal and India were resolved through
dialogue in the past and India was ready for more cooperation,” he said.
In the meeting,
Jaishankar had assured Minister Dr. Khadka that the imports of vaccines from
India would be easy from October and his country would give high priority to
its neighbours.
Another sideline
meeting between Dr. Khadka and his Bangladeshi Counterpart AK Abdul Momen
deliberated on Nepal-India-Bangladesh tripartite electricity plan, enhancement
of energy trade and promotion of mutual cooperation in regional and
multilateral issues.
He also met his
Bahraini counterpart Dr. Abdullatif Bin Rashid Alzayani where the latter
appreciated Nepal’s hospitality during their royal family’s ascent of Himalayan
peaks in Nepal.
Dr. Khadka also met
