Nepal needs MCC project: Dr. Bhattarai

Sept. 30

Janata Samajbadi Party’s Federal Council Chairman and former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai said that Nepal should ratify the Millennium Challenge Corporation’s grant project.

“Nepal needs to ratify the United States’ grant support project to assist the nation in its drive to reduce poverty and unemployment and achieve prosperity,” he said while addressing Organisation Strengthening and Peoples’ Awareness Campaign of the party in Lamjung on Thursday.

According to him, the country should accept foreign cooperation that is not against national interest and prestige.

“Nepal cannot remain a poor nation forever, and we need foreign support to achieve prosperity. We should approve the MCC grant by forging a national consensus,” he said.

Dr. Bhattarai stated that the MCC was just a grant support programme and such agreements were signed with many countries in the past. However, he maintained that the project had a provision of ratifying it with majority in the parliament but as per Nepal’s Constitution, this was not needed.

He said that as his party alone couldn’t make a decision on the issue of national debate and interest, this matter should be resolved with national consensus.
