Kathmandu, Apr. 12
Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava had a
courtesy call with Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji
Shrestha at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday.
During the meeting, the two discussed Prime Minister
Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda's upcoming visit to India, historical relations
between the two neighbours, continuous cooperation and border security.
DPM Shrestha expressed his belief that Prime Minister
Prachanda's visit to India would be decided soon and that the relationship
between the two countries would become closer during his and the current
government's tenure.
According to his secretariat, DPM Shrestha is of the
opinion that there should be an open discussion on sensitive issues such as
border management and cross-border crime control. He said that during his
recent visit to Rupandehi, he inspected a 'border outpost' and during that he
saw that there was good coordination and cooperation between the security
agencies of the two countries.
Ambassador Srivastava said that he is working to
arrange the programmes for the Prime Minister’s visit to India.
He said that both sides should be sensitive in terms of
border management so that citizens who regularly cross the border do not feel
that they are treated as criminals. Issues like creating 'integrated check
post' at Nepalgunj-Rupaidia, Bhairahawa-Sunauli and Dodhara-Chandni were also
discussed on the occasion.
Ambassador Srivastava said that in the meeting of the
'Joint Working Group on Border Management' held last year in New Delhi, an
agreement was made in terms of resolving development related dispute near the
border through further discussion, and that India was ready for that.
