Kathmandu, Nov. 6
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister
for Urban Development, Prakash Man Singh, has called for enhanced international
collaboration and partnership in financing for climate readiness of the water
and sanitation services.
Speaking at the 12th
World Urban Forum (WUF12) being held in Cairo, Egypt, he also insisted on greater
investments in local capacities to ensure that cities and urban spaces become
more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable, according to a statement
issued by the Embassy of Nepal in Cairo on Wednesday.
Speaking at the Forum’s 'Dialogue
on Cities and Climate Crisis', DPM Singh highlighted Nepal’s achievements in
enhancing people’s access to basic water supply and sanitation services over
the past decades, while also drawing attention to the challenges of water
management and service delivery amidst the risks posed by climate change.
"Rising incidences of flooding
and the disruption of existing water supply systems in Nepal and other
climate-vulnerable countries called for an elevated level of global partnership
in combating climate change and for supporting adequate and efficient water and
sanitation management systems to mitigate its impacts," the statement
quoted DPM Singh as saying.
He also presented Nepal’s
perspectives on multi-level governance for a sustainable urban future in his National
Statement at the WUF12 Ministerial Roundtable where he highlighted the crucial
role of collaboration among different levels of government in promoting
sustainable urbanisation and tackling the complex challenges towards achieving
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Likewise, at a session on ‘Accelerating
SDG Localisation Financing towards 2030 through UNDCF/UN-Habitat’ held at WUF12
on Wednesday, Secretary at the Ministry of Urban Development, Maniram Gelal, stressed
the urgency of augmenting financing for urban development in achieving SDGs.
Leading Nepali delegation, DPM Singh
reached Cairo on November 3 to attend the 12th World Urban Forum
being held from November 4-8.
