NRA sends engineers to support quake-hit families

Kathmandu, May 12:
The National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) has deployed 27 additional engineers to 14 districts severely affected by the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake in order to remove technical hurdles in the reconstruction of houses and support engineers already mobilised in the area.
The reconstruction body Friday organised an orientation programme for the engineers where NRA chief executive officer Dr. Govinda Raj Pokharel directed them to find innovative solutions in resolving technical issues that have delayed the house reconstruction process, and subsequent disbursement of second and third tranche of the housing grant.
“Within the parameters of the legal provision, I call you to provide innovate solutions,” a press statement issued by the Authority quoted Dr. Pokharel.
The engineers are hired by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for the NRA.
“They will be applying their expertise in implementing the recently approved Corrections/Exceptions Manual, which simplifies the technical procedures without compromising on quality of construction,” read the statement.
Many of the strict provisions in previous guidelines had created compliance issues thus delaying the certification by engineers and subsequently preventing disbursement of second and third installments of the grant.
The NRA has claimed that the corrections manual for the masonry structure offers a flexible approach while adhering to the ‘build back better’ principle.

NRA executive member Dhruba Prasad Sharma instructed the engineers to carefully study all the working procedures and guidelines issued by the NRA.
