Minister Jhakri wants to amend construction laws

Kathmandu, Dec. 8

Minister for Urban Development, Ram Kumari Jhakri, said that amendments to laws not to the bylaws were necessary to make the construction industry systematic and dignified.

Speaking at a programme organised by the Federation of Contractors Associations of Nepal (FCAN) before the beginning of a procession in Kathmandu to mark the 14th Construction Day on Wednesday, she said that the business needed construction-friendly laws.

According to her, amendment to the law was inevitable as there were problems in the construction industry from the selection of the project to the implementation stage.

Minister Jhakri informed that the government was preparing to bring a new Public Procurement Act by accommodating the feedbacks from the stakeholders. "The construction industry needs to be strong to keep the country's economy afloat," she said.

Stating that it is important for the society and the country as a whole to respect the builders, she suggested the construction businessmen to increase their capacity.

She urged the construction companies to be merged and converted into public companies. Ministry Jhakri also said that the rights and interests of the workers in the construction industry should be secured.

President of the FCAN, Ravi Singh, said that the vision of a prosperous country is impossible without the development and expansion of the construction industry.

Stating that there are many problems in the construction industry, he said that the federation is hopeful that the current government will bring business-friendly laws.

The procession started from Dasharath Stadium with a display of placards and reached the FCAN Secretariat, Anamnagar.

Thirty-four people donated blood in a programme organized at the secretariat on the occasion.
