Kathmandu, July 20
A
delegation of Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) has requested the newly appointed
Ambassador to Oman, Dornath Aryal, to take initiatives to attract investment
and tourists to Nepal from the Gulf nation.
In
a meeting held with Ambassador Aryal, President of NCC Rajendra Malla said that
nearly 20,000 Nepalis are working in Oman which is an economically prosperous
country. President Malla said that the Nepali Embassy should take initiative to
attract Omani tourists and investment to Nepal.
He
said that even though Nepal's diplomatic relations with Oman are very old,
tourists could not be attracted in lack of high-level visits.
Since
Nepal's trade deficit with Oman is high, Malla emphasized on expanding business
relations through tourism and investment. He also requested to take initiative
to open Nepal House in Oman.
The
Chamber said that it believed if Nepal House could be opened targeting Nepalis
working in Oman with arrangements to supply essential food, clothes and other
items from Nepal, economic activities would increase and it would help reduce
trade deficit.
Saying
that monthly remittances worth Rs. 2 billion is coming to the country from
Oman, Malla drew the attention of Ambassador Aryal for the arrangement that a
certain amount of remittances sent by the Nepali workers should be kept in the
infrastructure development fund.
In
response, Ambassador Aryal said that his main priority is to bring in tourists
and foreign investment from Oman. He also said that he would start a campaign
to bring one Omani citizen per Nepali working in Oman to Nepal. He also pledged
for the establishment of Nepal House. Ambassador Aryal is leaving for Oman on
Thursday.
