Nabil Bank completes 4 decades in business

Kathmandu, July 12

Nabil Bank Limited has completed four decades in the banking business.

To mark the occasion, it organised an interaction on the role of banking in sustainable development in Kathmandu on Friday.

Chairman of the bank, Upendra Paudyal mentioned that recently the bank was focusing on sustainable development and informed that the programmes and service delivery had been carried out accordingly.

Stating that the sustainable banking plan launched by the bank is based on long-term thinking, he said that it would help reduce carbon emissions, invest in green technology and advance projects that promote social and economic development.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the bank, Gyanendra Prasad Dhungana, informed that on the occasion of the bank's 40th anniversary, various programmes would be organised for the next 40 days to raise public awareness about sustainable development.

He said that in the next 40 days, activities such as cycling, rallies, and photo exhibition reflecting the journey of 'four decades of Nepal' have been scheduled.

Speaking on the occasion, Hana Singer Hamdi, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations for Nepal, mentioned that a large investment was needed to achieve the goals of sustainable development and emphasised that a bank like Nabil should invest in that.

"In order to meet the goals of sustainable development, the world needs 4 trillion dollars every year, which was estimated to be 2.5 trillion dollars annually before the coronavirus epidemic", she said, "In the case of Nepal, 23 billion dollars is needed and 6 billion dollars is insufficient every year, which is 11 per cent of the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP).”

She also expressed the view that Nepal needs a large investment to meet the goals of sustainable development and that Nabil Bank could increase large investments in the field of sustainable development.

Likewise, social entrepreneur Anil Chitrakar emphasised the need to protect the environment. He said that banks like Nabil need to increase investment in the field of sustainable development. He said, “We are dependent on the environment, if we do not protect the environment, problems will arise in the future.”

"Because there are tigers in Chitwan National Park, travel agencies in Kathmandu and other cities are operating, jobs have been created because the environment has been preserved," Chitrakar said.

Established on July 12, 1984, under the name of Nepal Arab Bank, Nabil Bank has been providing services focusing on customer convenience and simple banking services.

Nabil Bank claimed that it was using the highest technology while expanding simplified banking services, and it started computerised banking for the first time in Nepal.

Nabil was the first bank to start ATM service in Nepal in 1994, mobile banking for the first time in 2012, and smart chip service in International Master Card and Debit Card in 2014. Contactless payment card was introduced in Nepal for the first time in 2016. The bank last launched 'N Bank' in 2022 and provided more than 60 banking services through mobile for the first time in Nepal.

The bank has been providing services through its 22 extension counters and 316 ATM machines with a network of 268 branches across the country. Nabil Bank has been providing direct banking services to more than 2.2 million customers.
