Chief Minister, Yam Lal Kandel, said that human rights form the cornerstone of
an inclusive society.
"Human rights
are not merely a legal concept but the foundation for building a progressive
and harmonious society," he said while speaking at an event to mark the 76the
International Human Rights Day organised in Surkhet on Tuesday.
According to a
statement issued by CM Kandel's secretariat, he maintained that human rights
are considered fundamental rights and freedoms inherently granted to every
individual at birth, and these rights play a vital role in fostering a just and
advanced society.
He said that
Nepal's constitution upholds human rights as a core principle, enshrining them
as inalienable rights. However, challenges such as geographical complexities,
underdeveloped infrastructure, poverty, and limited access to education and
healthcare hinder the realization of these rights in some areas.
CM Kandel also
said that as long as a small group of individuals continues to exploit
resources, a significant gap will remain between the concept of human rights
and societal reality.
"While human
rights are universal, they are particularly crucial for voiceless,
marginalized, and disadvantaged groups. The government and all concerned
stakeholders need to focus on creating an environment and infrastructure that
enables these groups to exercise their rights without barriers,” he said.
Acknowledging that
government efforts alone are insufficient to protect human rights, Kandel
underlined the role of every citizen in respecting and upholding these rights.
He also urged citizens to remain mindful of not infringing on others' rights
while enjoying their own, emphasising the balance between rights and
responsibilities.
