First
ever national level Microfinance Members' Summit is being held in Kathmandu
next week.
Prime
Minister KP Sharma Oli will inaugurate the two-day conference, which is being
organized by the principal Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) and co-ordination
of the Centre for Self-Help Development (CSD), on Sunday.
According
to the organisers, the conference will witness an overwhelming participation of
women. "The summit is expected to be a gathering of more than 500 women
microfinance members representing the 75 districts of NEpal, diverse
backgrounds and castes. Apart from that,
high officials of microfinance organizations and policy makers will involve in
the deliberations," read a press statement issued by the organisers.
Chairman
of the Organising Committee, Shankar Man Shrestha, said that the summit would
be a sharing ground of varied microfinance members and would strive towards
finding ways to better serve the ultra-poor and marginalized sections of the
country.
"The
jamboree will evaluate the status, achievement, possible obstacles and
challenges of the microfinance sector. It will be used to get feedback for the
national policy formulation for the sector. We are confident that the
conference will formulate concrete strategy to promote entrepreneurship among
the microfinance members," said Shrestha.
The
theme of the summit is 'development of entrepreneurship, solution to poverty
alleviation'.
Forty-one
microfinance banks, 25 non-government organizations and about 100 cooperatives
are offering microfinance service across the country. They altogether are
catering service to 1.8 million families.
According
to the latest data, about Rs. 300 billion loan was mobilized by the
microfinance institutions and the repayment rate was 99 per cent.
