Ministry of Education (MoE)is
commencing school reconstruction through Emergency School Reconstruction
Project (ESRP)in financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation
Agency(JICA) Thursday.
Bishwa Prakash Pandit,
secretary of the Ministry of Education, DR. Hari Ram Parajuli, expert of
National Reconstruction Authority (NRA), and JICA vice president Hidetoshi
Irigaki will joiltly inaugurate the project with ground breaking ceremony at
Shree Kalidevi Higher Secondary School, Pyutar, Lalitpur.
Issuing a press statement, JICA
informed that the project targeted to rebuild and retrofit schools in the
districts severely affected by the earthquake in April and May last year by
financing the necessary expense for reconstruction of schools and related
facilities thereby contributing to the improvement of education services and
earthquake resilience.
Of the total cost of the project 132 million USD, JICA will finance
115.3 million USD.
“The project will cover 14 districts in collaboration with the Asian
Development Bank and the JICA will cover Lalitput, Dhading, Nuwakot, Rasuwa,
Gorkha and Makwanpur,” read the statement.
According to the JICA, for the first batch, out of 120 schools assessed,
84 had been identified feasible to start construction in six districts.
The earthquake inflicted huge damage in various section of which 7000
schools were destroyed and damaged.
