House Panel directs government to expedite airport construction

Kathmandu, Apr. 12: The Development Committee of the Legislative-Parliament Wednesday expressed serious concerns to the poor capital spending on the infrastructures like roads and airports, and directed the government to find ways to expedite the construction works at various airports.
Likewise, it asked the government and Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTA) to find clear construction modality for the Second International Airport (SIA) at Simara of Bara district.
After discussing with the Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Jiban Bahadur Shahi, member of the National Planning Commission (NPC), secretary of the Ministry, director general of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) and other stakeholders at the Singhadurbar, committee chairman Rabindra Adhikari directed them to give high priority to the construction of airports that are being constructed across the country.
“This committee directs the MoCTA, Finance Ministry, NPC and CAAN to review the agreement with the LMW, company that conducted detailed feasibility survey (DFS) of the SIA, prepare a clear framework of construction modality, and settle the disputes regarding to the site clearance and settlement,” said Adhikari.
The committee also asked the government to finalise the collaboration agreement with the Exim Bank of China for the construction of Pokhara Regional International Airport.
Likewise, the house panel directed the government and its agencies including the NPC to develop and issue a white paper on the progress made by San Jose, whether the company should pay penalty for the delay in construction and whether the country gained or lost by canceling the contract with San Jose.

“The white paper should be issued within 30 days,” said Adhikari.
