Jimbu Thakali set to expand its service in India

Kathmandu, July 29

Jimbu Thakali, a Nepali restaurant brand known for Thakali cuisine, is set to open its first international outlet in Gurugram, Haryana, India.

The restaurant will begin operations from Shrawan 15 (July 31) at a commercial complex in Sector 65, one of Gurugram’s prominent commercial and entertainment hubs, the company informed in a statement on Wednesday.

Founder of the company Bibek Man Sherchan said the expansion into India is not merely a business expansion but the beginning of an initiative to introduce Nepali cuisine, culture and hospitality to international markets.

"The new outlet aims to offer Indian and international customers an authentic taste of Thakali cuisine while providing them with an experience reflecting Nepal’s culture, hospitality and Himalayan lifestyle," he said.

The new restaurant will feature a range of traditional Thakali dishes, including the Thakali Khana (lunch/dinner) Set, dhido, buckwheat-based dishes, gundruk, sukuti, and specialties flavored with Nepali jimbu and timmur.

According to the company, to preserve the authentic taste of the cuisine, indigenous Nepali ingredients and spices, including jimbu and timur, will be sourced from Nepal, while other fresh ingredients will be procured locally in India.

It said the menu has also been adapted to appeal to international customers, combining traditional Thakali dishes with a selection of popular Nepali delicacies. The menu will include chatamari, bara, various varieties of momo, gundruk soup, sekuwa, desserts made with juju dhau and khuwa yamari.

"The restaurant’s interior has been designed to reflect Nepali culture and architecture. Nepali woodcraft, traditional patterned windows, artistic pillars and other elements representing Thakali culture have been incorporated into the design," read the statement.

The new outlet will have a seating capacity of around 90 customers at a time. The same complex will also house a branch of Himalayan Java, a Nepali coffee brand that has already expanded its presence in India.

Likewise, it will use the system of IMS Software, a Nepali software company that has also expanded its services into India, for operations management.

Sherchan said the decision to work with Nepali brands and technology companies in the international market was deliberate, demonstrating that Nepali businesses can compete internationally while supporting and strengthening one another.

Established in 2016, Jimbu Thakali currently operates four outlets in Nepal, located in Kalimati, New Baneshwor, Jhamsikhel and Tangal.

RG in course to redefine hospitality venues

 Kathmandu, Apr. 11

RG Creations has brought a visible shift in architectural design in the buildings and structures in Nepal's hospitality and event management sector.

It has created innovations in designs that move beyond conventional banquet and entertainment spaces. "We have transformed the party palaces, restaurants and banquet venues from the uniform layouts and rather monotonous design to integrated architectural planning, impactful interior detailing and functional layouts," the company said in a statement on Saturday.

According to it, RG has been among the firms contributing to this transition by focusing on spaces that combine utility with experience-oriented design.

The company’s portfolio includes a wide range of banquet and event venues such as Harsha Batika, Utsav Kunj, Mandala Moments, Rambagh Mahal, Taj Palace, Sangam Batika, Panas, Majestic Grand, Taj Reception, Piccolo Durbar, Imperial KL Tower and Imperial Bhaktapur.

These venues are designed to accommodate large gatherings while maintaining spatial organisation and operational efficiency, said Ram Giri, Executive Chairman of the company.

Likewise, in the nightlife and entertainment sector, the company has worked on projects including Victory Club, Faces Club, and Rocker’s Magic and Deja Vu Club. These venues incorporate lighting systems, spatial layouts and interior elements aimed at aligning with evolving urban entertainment preferences.

"We have introduced international-style ambiance into local entertainment spaces. These venues emphasize lighting, layout, and modern aesthetics to create distinctive and immersive experiences for visitors," said Giri.

The firm has also contributed to the food and beverage segment through designs for outlets such as Station Pub, Full Moon, Durbar Lounge and Swoorna Kara. These projects focus on balancing visual elements with circulation and seating arrangements to improve customer movement and usability.

In the hotel sector, projects like Royal Empire Boutique Hotel and Nepal Tara indicate the company’s involvement in accommodation infrastructure, adapting similar design principles across different categories of hospitality.

Giri said the company prioritises designing spaces that align with client requirements while maintaining technical and aesthetic considerations. Our goal is not just to build structures, but to shape experiences that people remember, he stated.

"We have a team of skilled engineers and consultants who design spaces tailored to our clients’ tastes, reflecting a modern and luxurious aesthetic,” Giri informed while noting that the demand for structured, experience-focused venues is increasing, particularly in urban centres.

Promoting Buddhist tourism in Lumbini is govt priority: Minister Pandey

Kathmandu, May 23

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey has said that the government is committed to making Nepal a centre for Buddhist culture heritage and an attractive destination of spiritual tourists.

He made this remark while inaugurating the Buddhist International Travel Mart (BITM) 2025 on Friday.

The BITM organised with the aim of establishing Nepal as a world centre for Buddhism, spirituality and peace tourism will continue till May 25

The BITM is an annual event organised by the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA).

"The time has come to spread the message of peace that began in Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, from Nepal to the world again," Minister Pandey said.

He said that Lumbini will be developed as an 'International City of Peace' and the government is committed to this.

Similarly, priority has been given to Buddhist tourism in Lumbini, focusing on major circuits including Kapilvastu, Ramgram, Devdaha, and Tilaurakot.

Minister Pandey said that work was underway to establish regular flights to Gautam Buddha International Airport and increase easier access to the road network to promote Buddhist tourism.

He said, "Referring to the latest dialogue with the UNESCO representative, we have urged them not place Lumbini on the list of dangerous sites. In addition, the government is taking initiatives to include Tilaurakot in the UNESCO potential list."

He urged those wishing for world peace to visit Nepal, as the country is on a journey towards a new era of peace and prosperity.

On the occasion, President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) Chandra Prasad Dhakal, urged stakeholders to promote Nepal as a premier Buddhist tourism hub.

He emphasised the importance of leveraging Nepal’s rich Buddhist heritage, including the birthplace of Buddha, Lumbini, and other sacred sites like Tilaurakot, Ramgram, Bouddha and Swoyambhu.

“This mart will be instrumental in promoting Nepali Buddhist tourist destinations at an international level and extend the stay of tourists in Lumbini,” Dhakal said.

He highlighted the potential of service and trade exchanges between international buyers and national sellers in the tourism sector.

Dhakal also urged for the further development of BITM, which began in 2019 under the leadership of the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), as a strong brand to establish Nepal as a key destination for Buddhist tourism.

He underscored the need to build a Buddhist Circuit connecting Nepal’s sites with pilgrimage locations in India to attract the large Buddhist populations in neighbouring countries.

“If we can encourage Buddhists worldwide to visit Lumbini at least once, it could transform Nepal’s tourism landscape,” he added.

Highlighting infrastructure challenges, he called for the effective operation of Gautam Buddha International Airport, which has faced operational delays despite significant investment.

He also raised concerns over connectivity issues and high airfare costs, exacerbated by government-imposed VAT on tickets.

A new benchmark in Nepal’s hospitality industry has been set with the soft opening of Aarya Hotel and Spa, a premium hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu.

The facility is built with an investment of Rs. 2.5 billion.

Spanning approximately 20 aana of land, the 'heritage' hotel blends modern luxury with rich Nepali art, culture, and traditional architecture which offers a unique experience for both domestic and international guests.

This ambitious project is the brainchild of Krishna Simkhada, a Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) from Dhading who spent over 25 years in Japan. Inspired by how the Japanese preserve their heritage, Simkhada returned with a mission: to create a hotel that showcases Nepal’s artistic legacy to the world.

“I saw how Japan protects its culture, and that inspired me to return home and build something meaningful,” he shared with a group of journalists at a programme organised at the hotel on Wednesday evening.

“Thamel represents Nepal globally, and I wanted tourists to experience the essence of Nepali identity before they leave,” he added.

The hotel offers 72 rooms across various categories, ranging from USD 60 to USD 1,680 per night. The traditional rooms are adorned with carved wooden panels, painted frames, and fine Nepali details.

Rooms have an ambience of Nepali architect, culture and feelings. For example, Tundals inside the room will surprise many guests, especially the foreign ones.

Similarly, the lobby is a gallery of Nepali art, featuring a stunning fusion of Mayur Jhyal (peacock window) and Desemaru Jhyal carvings. "Guests are welcomed with traditional Nepali hospitality, creating a warm, culturally grounded arrival experience," said Simkhada.

The hotel also features multiple premium amenities. On the 12th floor is Sora, an all-day dining restaurant with a capacity of over 100 guests. Adjacent to it is Skyline Sora, a skywalk-style dining space enclosed in glass, where guests can dine while enjoying aerial views of Kathmandu including iconic landmarks like Swayambhu and Dharahara.

Atop the building, The Thirteenth Retreat offers a 360-degree view lounge, showcasing landmarks like Swayambhunath and the surrounding hills. The ninth-floor houses Ninth Wave, a sophisticated bar, along with a temperature-maintained swimming pool and an eight-person outdoor jacuzzi.

Simkhada hopes that Arya Hotel and Spa will not only offer comfort and luxury but also help preserve and promote Nepal’s cultural identity through architecture, design, and hospitality.

Chefs Kandel, Khadka launch Nepali Cuisine Promotion Campaign

Kathmandu, Mar. 24

The Nepali Cuisine Promotion Campaign in coordination with farmers and the hospitality industry organised a food-tasting event Bhojanlipi-Swad in Kathmandu on Monday.

The campaign aims to establish direct contact with farmers and transform their produce into delicious dishes served in major cities across the country. The initiative also ensures that people can enjoy these meals either at hotels and restaurants or in the comfort of their own homes, said chefs Ghanshyam Kandel and Durga Bahadur Khadka.

The event held at the Hotel Himalayan Suite in Kathmandu, marked the official launching of the Campaign.

Talking to journalists after tasting the indigenous food prepared with multiple fusions, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Ramnath Adhikari, expressed the government's commitment to fully supporting the marketing of Nepali produce and cuisine.

At the event, a variety of dishes were prepared using fresh agricultural produce sourced from districts such as Ilam, Dhanusha, Sarlahi, Chitwan, Nawalparasi, Rolpa, Baglung and Jumla.

The Campaign promises to bring fresh agricultural produce from almost all regions of Nepal to Kathmandu and take it to the international markets.

The campaign coordinator, Amrit Sapkota, said that the initiative would facilitate the marketing of farmers’ produce, including grains, fruits, dairy, and fish and meat products. Initially, the focus will be on the market distribution of seasonal crops, with a gradual expansion towards promoting local handicrafts, tourism-related products, and small-scale enterprises.

Journalist and agro-tourism activist Devi Prasad Sapkota explained that he had joined the campaign to support farmers and cultivate a deeper appreciation for agriculture and soil. He also mentioned that he had been preparing for several years to assist in promoting government initiatives that encourage the production and consumption of domestic goods.

Kandel and Khadka are international chefs who have experience in preparing multiple cuisines in multiple countries including India, Japan and the USA. They are also making preparations to publish a recipe book of Nepali indigenous foods called 'Bhojanlipi'.
