Kathmandu, July 18

Vice-chairman of the National Planning Commission of Nepal Dr. Min Bahadur Shrestha has urged the global community for the allocation of SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Stimulus to support the implementation of SDGs as well as for mobilising Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) worth US$ 100 billion for the underdeveloped nations.

"The Least Developed Countries (LDCs) must be the centre of the global focus: SDGs will succeed if LDCs succeed," he said while delivering a statement on behalf of the LDCs at the General Debate of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) the other day, the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in New York informed in a statement.

The (SDR) is an interest-bearing international reserve asset created by the IMF in 1969 to supplement other reserve assets of member countries. The SDR is based on a basket of international currencies comprising the U.S. dollar, Japanese yen, euro, pound sterling and Chinese Renminbi, said the IMF.

Likewise, the HLPF is the central United Nations platform for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs at the global level. Dr. Shrestha also attended the three-day High-level Ministerial Segment of the Forum earlier the same day.

He highlighted the impacts of multiple crises on LDCs and underscored the key priorities for accelerating the implementation of the SDGs in the LDCs.

He urged the global community to rally behind the Doha Programme of Action for LDCs to ensure its full and timely implementation and support LDCs to achieve structural transformation through innovation and technology transfer. He emphasized the importance of multilateralism and the need for the reform of global financial architecture.

Dr. Shrestha also delivered the country statement at the Forum during the event later.

Prakash Pantha, Member of Federal Parliament and Chair of the Sustainable Development and Good Governance Committee of the National Assembly, Mahesh Kumar Bartaula and Madhav Sapkota, Members of the House of Representatives of Federal Parliament, Secretaries and officials of the Government of Nepal and officials of the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN are in the Nepali delegation led by Dr. Shrestha.
