MoF, USAID take stock of US-funded projects

Kathmandu, Aug. 11

The Ministry of Finance (MoF) and the USAID have taken stock of the projects being implemented with the US financial support in Nepal.

Speaking at the meeting held for the same at the MoF on Friday, Minister for Finance, Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, emphasised the need to mobilise American support to achieve concrete results by investing in rural infrastructure projects that provide direct support for rural roads, drinking water and improvements for the livelihood of the Nepali people.

He also praised the continuous bilateral cooperation of the US in the fields of education, health, agriculture, disaster management, democracy and good governance.

American Ambassador to Nepal Dean Thompson expressed his satisfaction that there has been a long-standing partnership between Nepal and the United States in various fields of development.

The purpose of this review meeting was to strengthen the partnership between Nepal and the USA by clarifying the roles and responsibilities during this period, the achievements of the projects operated under the USAID cooperation agreement, flow of funds, and increased emphasis on the use of local organisations in the budget.

Finance Secretary Arjun Prasad Pokharel, USAID Mission Director, Sepideh Keyvanshad, and officials from the MOF and the USAID were present at the meeting.

As per the bilateral umbrella agreement signed between Nepal and the United States last year, Nepal would receive the aid of US$ 659 million under budgetary system over a period of five years.
