Kathmandu, Dec. 12
Minister for Communication and Information
Technology Parbat Gurung said on Sunday that only dignified journalism could
promote press freedom and contribute to the betterment of society.
“Only good journalism can contribute to social
development and welfare. In recent times, many institutions are losing their
dignity but I am hopeful that journalism will enhance its image and play a crucial
role in checking malpractices and in improving other sectors,” he said while
speaking at the closing ceremony of Nepal Association of Financial Journalists
(NAFIJ),’s fifth general meeting on Saturday.
He said that media had an important role in
raising awareness among the people about many things. “Wrong and misleading
information does much harm to the people and society at large. Therefore, I
urge you to adhere to the professional code of conduct to create credibility
and strengthen press freedom,” he added.
Minister Gurung was critical of the media owners who had forced
working journalists to face tough time during the pandemic while the formers
were untouched by its economic fallout. He said that such practices must be
changed.
Maintaining that it was the time of economic revolution, he
urged the journalists and media to work for the social development and economic
growth.
The meeting of NAFIJ unanimously elected a 15-member working
committee led by Modnath Dhakal. Menuka Karki and Bhuban Acharya are
vice-presidents, Narayan Poudel general secretary, Royal Acharya secretary and
Azmat Ali joint-secretary. Likewise, Parmeshwor Adhikari is the treasurer, and

Pyakurel for their contribution to economic journalism. Minister for Finance
