Kathmandu, Dec. 10
The 8th
meeting of Joint Steering Committee and Joint Working Group (JWG) on
Nepal-India Cooperation in Power Sector has kicked off on Thursday via virtual
platform.
The two-day meeting
will deliberate on grid interconnectedness, Nepal’s market access to India for
surplus energy and Indian investment in Nepal’s hydroelectricity and solar
power, Indian Embassy in Nepal said in a tweet.
The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and
Irrigation said that the meeting would discuss the Dhalkebar-Mujaffarpur, new
Butwal-Gorakhpur and other cross-country transmission lines, and the formation
of new institution with bilateral investment and human resources to develop the
latter project.
The meeting is also
expected to conclude the remaining issues of the Power Trade Agreement between
the two neighbours. It would pave way to manage Nepal’s surplus electricity
during monsoon.
Although India has
pledged to buy surplus energy from Nepal, it had not formulated procedure for
the same.
Thursday’s meeting led
by joint-secretaries of the energy ministries of Nepal and India deliberated on
the technical aspects of the issues.
The secretary-level
meeting will be held on Friday which is expected to have final say on various
energy related bilateral matters.
