Nepal Int’l Gem, Jewellery Expo from May 17


Kathmandu, April 17:  To promote gemstones and minerals and boost their export, the Department of Mines and Geology (DMG) and Federation of Nepal Gold Silver Gem and Jewellery Associations are organising gem and jewellery expo from May 17 to 19. 


The Nepal International Gem and Jewellery Expo 2019 will be held on the premises of the DMG in Lainchaur, in the Capital, and will be participated by more than 70 national and foreign companies. 


“We are organising this event to motivate the entrepreneurs to find export markets and attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the country. This will ultimately support the economic growth in the country,” said Ramesh Maharjan, President of the association. 


According to him, the expo will be a promotional collection of technology, machinery and equipment suppliers, gem and jewellery education institute, security systems and packaging system investors, diamond and jewellery businesspersons, and rock and minerals investors. 


He said that many businesspersons of South Asian and other countries are interested to participate in the event. 


The expo will feature presentation and exhibition about gem and stones available in Nepal, workshop on procession and standards of gem, stones and minerals, exhibition of traditional and modern Nepali jewelleries, seminar and meetings between businesses, and fashion show. 


“A souvenir will be published on the first day of the expo, seminar on the promotion of gem and jewellery will be organised on the second day and the last day of the event will feature the ‘Jewellery Fashion Show’,” said Maharjan. 


The event will be organised as the non-profit activity as it intends to support the promotion of traditional and original Nepali jewellery, said Director General of the DMG Dr. Somnath Sapkota. 


There will be nominal entry fee and the stalls will be provided at minimum rates. 


“We aim at enhancing the contribution of gem and minerals to the Gross Domestic Product of the country by increasing the exposure of the raw as well as the finished goods,” he said.

He said that the department was working to increase the value addition in the gems and jewellery at the local level. 


The expo is being organised in the gap of three years after 2016.
