Kathmandu, June 11
The
ninth National Food and Science Technology Conference began here on Monday.
Nepal
Food Scientists and Technologists Association (NFOSTA), Department of Food
Technology and Quality Control and Feed the Future Food Systems for Nutrition Innovation
Lab at Tufts University are jointly organising the two-day conference on June
12 and 13.
It
is also supported by Baliyo Nepal, Central Technology Campus Dharan and Sun
Business Network.
According
to the organisers, the conference is being organised with the slogan of 'Food
Science and Innovation for Safe Healthy Diets and Sustainable Food Systems'.
The
conference will be inaugurated by Minister for Agriculture and Livestock
Development Dr. Beduram Bhusal.
This
conference is important to discuss food and related issues. "Overall
development of the country cannot be achieved without improving the overall
situation of food hygiene, food safety, and nutrition in Nepal. So, this summit
is being organised with the objective of achieving the commitments made by
Nepal at the World Food System Summit, and further improving Nepal's food
hygiene, food safety, and nutritional status," said Dr. Atul Upadhyay,
Chairperson of the conference organising committee.
The
conference also aims to promote the existing traditional and rural technology
in Nepal and to sustainably develop the overall food ecosystem of Nepal.
The
conference will also issue a Kathmandu Declaration, which is created from the
scientific conclusions obtained from the research papers, discussions, and
technical exhibitions of scientists and researchers in the country and abroad.
Issues
to be delved into during the conference include reducing malnutrition with the
help of food technology and science, the importance of food science and
technology to reduce food damage and loss, production and processing and
certification of high-value crops, and food hygiene and sustainable and
resilient food systems.
