Kathmandu, Apr. 15: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has
said that modern and planned settlements were needed for the overall
development of Karnali province.
“Due to the difficult terrain, it is difficult to
extend government services and development programmes to the people of the
region in the present condition, therefore we need an integrated settlement
development plan,” he said at a programme organised by the Mid-Western
University to felicitate the PM in Surkhet.
According to him, the government was planning to
advance the province in multiple sectors of development as it was lagging
behind in terms of economic and human development index.
He emphasised on opening all the border points and
customs along the northern borders of the province since it was not connected
with the southern neighbour, India.
PM Oli also pointed towards the possibility of
making the entire province pesticides-free.
“It is not possible to implement such a concept in the
other provinces, but as Karnali is in a developing phase, it would be easy to
make it a poison-free land,” he said.
He said that the province would be mainstreamed in all
development aspects, such as communication, transportation, health and
education, and promised to begin the journey towards prosperity from the very
land.
He appealed to the newly elected local, provincial
and federal leaders to lead the development process by utilising the local
potential in agriculture, herbs, tourism and energy.
The PM suggested the university develop the
curriculum in a way that would help create technically sound and skilled
manpower.
Defence Minister Ishwor Pokharel, Education Minster
Giri Raj Mani Pokharel and Tourism Minister Rabindra Adhikari were present on
the occasion.
