NRA urges Bungmati locals to maintain heritage looks in their houses

Lalitpur, Oct. 6: The National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) has urged the locals of Bungmati, a small town 10 km south of Kathmandu, to develop the historic town in its original form.

Many private houses and religious-cultural heritages were damaged in the devastating 2015 Gorkha Earthquake.

To support and promote the original rebuilding of the heritage settlements like Bungmati, the NRA has announced various programmes, Chief Executive Officer of the NRA Sushil Gyawali said at an interaction here on Saturday.

“The government will provide additional Rs. 50,000 to each reconstruction beneficiary to maintain the heritage look of their house. Therefore, you should work to create attractive look in your town,” he said.

He also said that the reconstruction would support in developing infrastructure in the town.
According to Gyawali, the NRA had unveiled the Bungmati Master-Plan from President Bidya Devi Bhandari a couple of years ago and wanted to inaugurate the settlement from the prime minister.

Participants of the interaction said that the original form of the houses and heritages in Bungmati would be an attraction for tourists.

Lawmaker from the region, Pampha Bhusal said that she had a plan to develop a heritage ring road around the town and expressed her support for every need for the original rebuilding.

“Prosperity of this area is possible only through the preservation of arts, culture and heritages,” she said.

Parliamentarian of Province Assembly, Jiban Khadka said that the locals had a crucial role to play in implementing the Bungmati development master-plan.

According to Bungmati Area Reconstruction and Development Council Prem Bhakta Maharjan, of the 805 households that signed the housing grant agreement with the government, 593 have obtained the first installment. But, very few families have received the second installment.

He said that reasons behind the poor progress in the reconstruction of private houses
were inability in the part of the beneficiaries to develop house map, difficulty to pass house-map in the heritage area and lack of registration of the land.

The then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had unveiled the map of Bungmati Master-Plan in January 2015.
