Second SA Youth Summit to be held in Colombo

Kathmandu, Sept. 30:

The second South Asian Youth Summit 2018 will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 28-30 November, 2018 with the theme of ‘creating sustainable future in a fractured south Asia’.

“The summit is being organised as a platform to increase the areas of cooperation in the field of youth for better ties and economic prosperity amongst the members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC),” said the organiser of the conference, International Youth Committee (IYC).

IYC realises that the development of the SAARC nations depends largely on the opportunities provided for the youth and in the building of their skills, to use them in a timely and appropriate fashion, said IYC.

It expressed confidence that with the involvement of youth in every movement of decision making processes would enhance the region both economically and in ushering in peace and ending terrorism.

“The summit will seek to assess conditions affecting the development of the information society in the region, establish information networks and partnerships among youth movements for the sharing of experiences as well as facilitate the incorporating and updating of national policies on youth issues,” said IYC.

The summit will also create an inclusive platform for youth that enables them to review the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), share ideas, experiences and innovative approaches for effectively contributing to the SDG framework and its implementation.

The summit will deliberate on issues like lack of adequate institutional mechanisms to foster youth participation in decision making processes, need to encourage government of the Asian countries to adopt and domesticate the World Programme of Action for Youth in line with their national priorities and need for the effective implementation of inclusive and gender-sensitive national youth policies.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jagat Bahadur Shahi will attend the summit.
