Kathmandu, Feb. 4: The
seventeenth session of the BIMSTEC senior officials’ meeting (SOM) and its
preceding meetings will begin in Kathmandu on Sunday.
The preceding meetings
include seventh meeting of the BIMSTEC Joint Working Group on the establishment
of BIMSTEC Permanent Secretariat (BIMSTEC-JWG) and second preparatory meeting
to the seventeenth session of the BIMSTEC SOM, informed the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs in a press statement.
“The BIMSTEC-JWG will
meet on 5 February to discuss administrative and financial issues of the
secretariat and its report will be submitted to the BIMSTEC-Prep SOM to be held
next day. The Prep SOM is expected to deliberate on reports of various meetings
held under BIMSTEC in 2015 and 2016, and will report to the SOM,” read the
statement.
Both the meetings will
be chaired by Mani Prasad Bhattarai, chief of Regional Organisation Division at
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).
The SOM will meet on 7
February to review the implementation of various decisions made under BIMSTEC
mechanism and will recommend future courses of action in order to strengthen
regional cooperation under the regional body.
Foreign secretary and
head of Nepalese delegation Shankar Das Bairagi will chair the meeting.
Officials from the MoFA,
Ministry of Finance and Office of the Prime Minister and Council of the
Ministers will participate in the meetings.
Nepal is the current
chair of the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiatives for Multi-Sectoral, Technical
and Economic Cooperation).
