Memorial organised to mark Ghunsa Chopper crash



Kathmandu, Sept. 23: A memorial programme was organised to mark a tragic chopper crash at Ghunsa of Taplejung at the Ramkot Park in Kathmandu. 

The National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management conducted the memorial assembly to mark the incident that killed all 24 people on board on September 23, 2006.
The crash site was about 190 miles east of the capital city. 


The helicopter was carrying the then Minister of State for Forestry Gopal Rai, the chargé d'affaires of embassy of Finland Pauli Mustonen and the United States Agency for International Development deputy director in Nepal Margaret Alexander.

Likewise, geographer Dr. Harka Gurung, conservationist Dr. Tirtha Man Maskey, secretary at the Ministry of Forestry Ministry Dr. Damodar Prasad Parajuli, Director General of Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Narayan Poudel, Member of Taplejung Chamber of Commerce and Industry Bijaya Kumar Shrestha, two Nepali journalists, representatives of other organisations and four crew members - two Russians and two Nepalis, were also in the helicopter. 

“We have been organising the memorial day every year,” said the chairman of the Fund Pushpa Raj Pandey.
The Fund has established statues of all 24 people who died in the accident.
