Kathmandu, March11:
The Sixth SAARC Business Leaders
Conclave (SBLC) is scheduled to be held in Nepal on March 16-18.
The conclave was initially designed to be organised in Pakistan, but Nepal
is holding it this year as it couldn't be organised in Pakistan due to various
reasons, said Suraj Vaidya, President of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and
Industry.
The summit will be inaugurated by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
The three-day regional summit, being organised by the SAARC CCI, will
deliberate on various economic, business and regional issues such as common
growth of SAARC region, trade and investment promotion, economic and political
crisis, role of SAARC in the world economy, successes in energy and
cooperatives in the region and action plan for the future.
There will be seven different parallel panel discussions in the second day
of the conclave and five panel discussions on the third day. The last session
will feature the commerce ministers of the SAARC member countries.
"More than 50 reputed speakers will participate in the conclave and
more than 200 SAARC countries' representatives, private sector, academia and
communication sectors will attend it," said Om Rajbhandari, vice-president
of the SAARC CCI.
This is the second time the Himalayan nation is welcoming the regional
business leaders after 2011.
Vaidya said that Nepal should harness as much benefit from the conference as
possible.
According to him, though the common people and businessmen of the south
Asian region have expected a lot from this regional body, it has underperformed
because of political tensions.
Joint-Secretary at the Ministry of Commerce, Supply and Industry Rabi
Shankar Sainju assured government support to private sector activities and said
that the conclave would be a platform for Nepal to update regional businessmen
and investors about Nepal's changed status and new investment policies.
