Carelessness in construction work will be punishable: Mahaseth

Kathmandu, May 1
Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Raghubir Mahaseth on Wednesday said that he would punish the civil servants who exhibit carelessness in construction works.

"I know there are some anomalies in the construction business, but it is not right to hold responsible only the contractors. Civil servants who commit mistakes will also be punished," he said while speaking at the National Meeting organised by the Federation of Contractors Association of Nepal (FCAN) organised to discuss on the Bylaws of Public Procurement Act and Construction Business Act.

However, he was not particular about the 'mistake' or 'carelessness' of the civil servants, and did not explain about the mistakes and punishments.

Minister Mahaseth said that the government was doing homework to formulate business-friendly act and rules.

"The liability of leading the country to prosperity is yours. Therefore, the government is committed to addressing your problems, and the acts and rules will be amended if needed," he said.

According to him, the rules and laws that were promulgated during the unitary governance system needed to be amended at the earliest in order to facilitate the businesses.

He warned the contractors not to misuse the advance money given to them to implement development projects.

"The money is not yours but a facility provided by the government, therefore do not misuse it," he said.

President of the FCAN Rabi Singh said that the contractors were ready to support in the 'Prosperous Nepal: Happy Nepali' national campaign, but the environment needed to be improved.

Earlier on Tuesday, the FCAN had sought help from media to exert pressure on the government to ensure the contractors' safety as they were continuously getting threat calls for the last couple of months.
