Government committed to 'Digital Nepal': Baskota

Kathmandu, May 14: Minister for Communication and Information Technology Gokul Prasad Baskota said on Tuesday that the government was committed to building 'digital Nepal'.

"The country will be turned into fully digital nation by the end of the 15th five-year plan 2019/20-2024/25," he said while inaugurating the Disaster Recovery Centre for the central data centre at Huprechaur in Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City, Capital of Province 3.

According to him, optical fibre would be laid across the east-west Mid-Hill Highway, 4G technology would be expanded outside the Kathmandu Valley, and additional data centres would be established in Kathmandu, Kohalpur of Banke district and Itahari or Sunsari district.

"This data centre in Hetauda will work as a backup system during the natural disasters," he said.
Minister Baskota said that the government was committed to making positive changes in the society with infrastructure development and well-planned development.

He said that any political movement and violent activities were not needed, and the government would protect the rights of the press.

"The government has ensured the economic rights along with the freedom of the press. The freedom has not been hampered but will be strengthened," he stated.

He reiterated that the ruling party had fought for the equality, freedom and democracy so it would give topmost priority to maintain the constitutional supremacy and citizens' rights.
He reminded the journalists that their duty was to point out the weaknesses not to defame anyone.

He said the government would not formulate laws looking at the power and posts but by following the loktantrik system.

Minister for Financial Affairs and Planning of State 3 Kailash Dhungel and executive director of the National Information Technology Centre Sunil Poudel had also addressed the function chaired by Secretary at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology  Mahendra Man Gurung.
