NIA directs insurance companies for payments

Kathmandu, Jan. 7

The Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA) has directed all insurance companies to ensure that all types of payments are made mandatorily through electronic systems from January 15, Thursday.

The NIA issued instructions on Tuesday to life insurance companies, non-life insurance companies, microinsurance companies, reinsurance companies and insurance brokers to make arrangements so that, from January 15 onwards, all payments are compulsorily made through electronic systems directly into the bank accounts of the concerned individuals or institutions.

The directive has been issued in line with the Anti-Money Laundering Directive, 2082, which requires insurers to ensure that claim payments under insurance policies are deposited into the bank accounts of the rightful beneficiaries in accordance with policy terms or prevailing laws.

It also follows the government provision mandating that all payments made by public bodies be conducted digitally through the banking system.

Previously, the NIA had instructed insurance companies to ensure that remuneration or wages paid to permanent, temporary and any other category of employees and workers are mandatorily disbursed through banks or financial institutions into the respective employees’ or workers’ bank accounts.
