EU supports 5.5 million euros for quake-victims

The European Union has released Rs. 660.7 million (5.5 million euros) as humanitarian aid funding for Nepal in 2016.
“It will be used to respond to humanitarian needs like shelter and to strengthen the disaster preparedness capacities of the most vulnerable communities in quake-affected areas,” said the EU in a press statement.
The EU claimed that the aid would benefit close to 290,000 people across nine districts severely hit by the devastating earthquake last year.
“As we continue to address the humanitarian needs that remain one year after the earthquake, it is of paramount importance to ensure that the country is also better equipped to cope with recurring natural hazards,” said Christos Stylianides, the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management.
Over one year after the powerful April 2015 earthquake, humanitarian needs, particularly for shelter, remain immense.
Millions of people are still living in poorly constructed temporary shelters that were built in a hurry in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake. The lack of secure and adequate shelters has triggered concerns over the health and protection of survivors, read the press statement.

With the newly released fund, the total EU support to Nepal reaches 19.5 million euros.
