Kathmandu, Aug. 8:
Newly appointed Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Bhanu
Bhakta Dhakal said on Wednesday that the government had started homework for
the amendment of the laws that had long been a hindrance to business
establishment and expansion.
He assured a delegation
of businessmen from the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) which met
him at his office in Singha Durbar, that the government would expedite the
process to improve the legal provisions in order to create a business-conducive
environment in the country.
However, he said that
currently the ministry was working on the laws related to the fundamental
rights of citizens, and business-related laws would be the next in the series.
CNI president Hari
Bhakta Sharma said that many laws promoted and simplified the import trade
rather than promoting manufacturing industries and other businesses in the
country, therefore the government must give priority to improving such legal
regime.
According to him, some
of the prevailing acts were made during the period when the country was under
the ‘guided economy’, which have become irrelevant now since Nepal has become a
member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and such laws are in
contradiction with various international treaties and conventions that the
country has been a part of.
The CNI presented an
exhaustive list of legal provisions that needed amendment, change and
annulment, and the new acts that needed to be enacted.
