Kathmandu, Aug.
22: President Bidya Devi Bhandari is scheduled to meet the leaders of
BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectorial Technical and Economic
Cooperation) on 30 August, the first day of the fourth BIMSTEC Summit.
She will host a
luncheon in their honour, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on
Wednesday.
Similarly, Prime
Minister KP Sharma Oli will chair the summit which will review progress
achieved so far in the areas of cooperation and provide guidance to the future
work of the organisation.
The PM will host
a dinner with cultural programme in the same evening.
“The leaders
will witness the signing ceremony of the legal instrument of BIMSTEC and
consider the draft of Kathmandu Declaration of the Summit on 31 August,” said
the MoFA.
Prior to the
summit, Nineteenth Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) and Sixteenth Ministerial
Meeting of BIMSTEC will be held on 28 and 29 August respectively in Kathmandu.
The Foreign
Ministry said that all the member states of the regional mechanism had
confirmed their participation in the summit and the meetings preceding it.
“The Summit will
witness high dignitaries from all the member countries. All countries will be
represented by the head of the government or head of the state, the executive
one. There will be two presidents and four prime ministers,” said Minister for
Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali while talking to The Rising Nepal.
Nepal has
assumed the Chairmanship of BIMSTEC after its third summit meeting held in Nay
Pyi Taw, Myanmar in March 2014.
