Minister Adhikari pledges to represent Dalit community in land commission

Kathmandu, Sept. 23

Minister of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation of Nepal, Balaram Adhikari, said that a new Land Commission will be formed by including the Dalit community.

After accepting the 4-point attention letter submitted by Nepal Utpidit Dalit Jatiya Mukti Samaj (an association of oppressed caste groups affiliated to the CPN-UML), he promised to take initiatives for the rights and interests of the oppressed Dalit community. According to Minister Adhikari, the representation of Dalits has been legally ensured as it has been mentioned in the formation order for the land commission formation that there will be one representative of the Dalit community in the Central Land Commission.

Jitu Gautam, Politburo Member of CPN-UML and in-charge of Mukti Samaj, urged the Minister to provide land to the landless Dalit community, farmers and landless squatters.

The Mukti Samaj has demanded the representation of Dalit community in the new land commission even at the district level.

It has demanded to design and implement programmes to engage them in businesses based on the traditional occupations of the Dalit community, make them commercial and arrange for long-term livelihood programmes.
