Kathmandu, May 18
Executive Director of the United Nations
Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, paid a courtesy
call on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Sunday.
During the meeting held at the Prime
Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, PM Oli expressed gratitude for Diong’s
participation in the first series of the Sagarmatha Dialogue, the Prime
Minister's secretariat informed in a statement.
He emphasised that without the protection
of the Himalayas and the environment, human life would be at risk, so, the
global community must pay serious attention to the matter. Expressing concern
over attempts by some major wealthy countries to withdraw from the Paris
Agreement, Prime Minister Oli stated that the protection of Sagarmatha and the
Himalayas is an issue of equal importance for both Nepal and the rest of the
world.
Likewise, Diong congratulated Nepal for
organising Sagarmatha Dialogue and expressed the Fund’s commitment to
prioritising countries like Nepal when mobilising resources in the future.
Present during the meeting were Joint
Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Krishna Prasad Dhakal, and Joint
Secretary of the Ministry of Forests and Environment, Dr. Maheshwar Dhakal,
among others.
The Fund was established based on the
decisions of COP-27 to support developing countries affected by the impacts of
climate change. The Fund’s board will consist of 26 members from signatory
countries of the Paris Agreement, 12 from developed countries, and 14 from
developing nations.
On behalf of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Dr. Dhakal, has been appointed as an invited member of the board.
