Diong calls on PM Oli

Kathmandu, May 18

Executive Director of the United Nations Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Sunday.

During the meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, PM Oli expressed gratitude for Diong’s participation in the first series of the Sagarmatha Dialogue, the Prime Minister's secretariat informed in a statement.

He emphasised that without the protection of the Himalayas and the environment, human life would be at risk, so, the global community must pay serious attention to the matter. Expressing concern over attempts by some major wealthy countries to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, Prime Minister Oli stated that the protection of Sagarmatha and the Himalayas is an issue of equal importance for both Nepal and the rest of the world.

Likewise, Diong congratulated Nepal for organising Sagarmatha Dialogue and expressed the Fund’s commitment to prioritising countries like Nepal when mobilising resources in the future.

Present during the meeting were Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Krishna Prasad Dhakal, and Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Forests and Environment, Dr. Maheshwar Dhakal, among others.

The Fund was established based on the decisions of COP-27 to support developing countries affected by the impacts of climate change. The Fund’s board will consist of 26 members from signatory countries of the Paris Agreement, 12 from developed countries, and 14 from developing nations.

On behalf of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Dr. Dhakal, has been appointed as an invited member of the board.
