Nepal, Bangladesh prosper by using natural resources: FM Khatiwada

Kathmandu, Aug. 7

Ambassador of Bangladesh to Nepal Mashfee Binte Shams has said that Nepal and Bangladesh can promote bilateral trade through favoured-nation clause with concessions.

During a meeting with Finance Minister Dr. Yuba Raj Khatiwada on Friday, she said that there was a need for cooperation in trade, energy and investment between the two countries.

She pledged to move and act together with Nepal in regional and international forums and said that bilateral interests could be promoted through the platforms like Colombo Forum and Sagarmatha Sambad.

It was envoy Shams’ farewell call to the FM. She is returning to Dhaka after completing her 7-year tenure in Kathmandu.

Dr. Khatiwada said that the two neighbours could prosper through the maximum utilisation of natural and human resources.

“We can cooperate in various regional and international issues since we have similar views on many international issues,” he said. “There are chances of cooperation in disaster management, climate change, migrant safety, immigration, labour management and refugee management,” he added.

The Finance Minister also scored the importance of sub-regional mechanism ‘Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal’ (BBIN) in promoting cooperation in trade and culture.

He said that Nepal had learned from Bangladesh’s experience in microfinance, financial literacy, financial access and mobile banking and urged to work in the new areas of cooperation in the post-COVID-19 situation.
