Kathmandu, May 9
Minister
for Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Ramesh Rijal, has urged the United Kingdom
for the continuation of concessional facilities to Nepali products even after
the country graduates to the 'developing nation' status in 2026.
Nepal
is graduating from the Least Developing Country to developing one in 2026 which
means it will lose the favours provided by the developed countries on its
exports.
Speaking
to Ambassador of the UK, Nicola Pollitt at his office on Tuesday, Minister
Rijal said to the envoy that to make the process of upgrading sustainable and
easy, the UK should continue the concessional business facilities like the
General System of Preference and rules of origin.
According
to the secretariat of the minister, bilateral relations, economic relations, development
cooperation, trade and investment were discussed in the courtesy meeting.
Stating
that Nepal and the United Kingdom have been friends for years, Minister Rijal
expressed his belief that the relationship between Nepal and the UK will continue
to strengthen during the tenure of Ambassador Pollitt.
He
also expressed his expectation for increased investment from Britain in
potential areas of Nepal including energy, information technology and service
sectors.
Minister
Rijal made it clear that he expected the British envoy's greatest efforts to
increase and diversify investment from the UK in Nepal.
He
also informed that Nepal is ready to work together with the UK on the climate
change agenda, which is a common global challenge.
Likewise,
Pollitt stressed on improving the investment environment in Nepal. She also
assured that the British government will continue to support the development in
Nepal.
