Kathmandu, Aug 1
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is positive about
establishing a cooperative bank in Nepal.
In a meeting with Financial and Cooperative
Institution Coordination Department of Nepali Congress, he said that he was
positive to open a new cooperative bank that would be representative of the
entire cooperative sector in the country.
If established, it would be the second cooperative
bank after National Cooperative Bank Limited (NCBL) which was established in
2003.
A delegation of the department led by its Chief and NC
Central Committee Member Ananda Prasad Dhungana had called on the PM to update
about the activities of the organisation and need of a new cooperative bank.
Secretary at the department Surendra Bhandari had
handed over a letter of best wishes to PM Deuba as well.
"We have informed the PM about the work and
processes that we had completed in terms of opening 'Nepal Cooperative Bank'.
With the positive response from the PM, the department will initiate additional
process to launch the bank," said Bhandari.
According to him, the delegation suggested the PM that
the NC-led government should address the problems of the cooperative sector.
The delegation also included Bharat Dhakal, Sita Ram
Kafle, Madhav Dulal, Shakti Khadka and Sharad Maharjan.
A team led by Bhandari has obtained the permission
from the Department of Cooperatives for the bank. It will come into operation
immediately after it receives approval letter from Nepal Rastra Bank and National
Cooperatives Federation.
NCBL said that it was established to meet the
financial needs and launch different promotional activities to support its
member cooperatives to be more professional and competitive.
