Foreign Secretary of
India, Vikaram Misri paid courtesy calls to President Ramchandra Paudel and
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Sunday afternoon.
On the occasion, President
Paudel said that Nepal and India should work together to reduce the impact of
climate change. "Since the safety of mankind depends on the safety of
mountains and water, both countries must work together to minimise the effects
of climate change," President Paudel's press advisor Kiran Pokharel quoted
the President as saying.
Misri has arrived in
Kathmandu on a 2-day visit at the invitation of Nepal’s Foreign Secretary Sewa
Lamsal.
President Paudel
mentioned that there has been a relationship between Nepal and India since time
immemorial as well as India's support in the development of Nepal. He expressed
his hope that the relationship between the two countries would be strengthened
during the tenure of Secretary Misri.
President Paudel said
that the friendship and cooperation between the two countries should be
strengthened for mutual benefit and prosperity. “Modernisation of agriculture,
infrastructure development, hydropower, trade, investment, tourism and human
resource development are the priorities of Nepal. There is a lot of potential
for hydropower development, sustainable and energy trade in Nepal,” he said.
Likewise, Indian Foreign
Secretary Misri expressed his commitment to work together with Nepal on the
issue of reducing the effects of climate change as it is a challenge for both
countries. He said that India was also willing to work on the priority areas of
Nepal, such as energy, agriculture, and tourism among others.
Misri also informed that
India is willing to complete the ongoing projects soon and work on the new
priorities.
Similarly, in the meeting
between PM Oli and Indian Foreign Secretary Misri, issues about further
strengthening bilateral and friendly relations were discussed. The two also
deliberated on expediting the various sectors of bilateral cooperation.
Secretary of the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs Sewa Lamsal and other government officials participated in
the meeting.
Meanwhile, Misri jointly
with the Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development, Maniram Gelal,
inaugurated the new building of Nepal Bhasha Parishad built under India’s
post-earthquake reconstruction grant.
