Kathmandu, July 8: Centre for Self-help Development (CSD) in
collaboration with the Grameen Trust (GT) Bangladesh is organising a two-day
programme on ‘Grameen Financial System’ for Nepali microfinance bankers.
The programme, started on Friday, is attended by 46 microfinance
practitioners from 37 micro-finance institutions (MFIs) across the country.
“It is expected that the Nepali MFIs will get acquainted with the best
practices of the Grameen Financial Syatem and be inspired to make amends in the
deficiencies witnessed in the individual companies participating in the
programme, resulting in solving problems currently faced by the sector through
mutual cooperation and understanding,” said CSD Chairman Shankar Man Shrestha.
According to him, microfinance was established with twin objectives of
social and economic development of the poor. With the unhealthy rise in the
number of MFIs entering the sectcor, only those who abide by the fundamentals
of microfinance will be able to achieve long term sustainability.
Participating microfinance bankers said that commercialization and
profit oriented MFIs would cause damage to the image of the sector.
Even after four decades of operation, Grameen Bank continues to follow
the basic principles and fundamentals of microfinance.
Two experts from Bangladesh, former Manading Director of Grameen Bank
Ratan Kumar Nag and Grameen Trust’s representative Mir Hossain Chowdhary will
deliver presentations on the topic.
