Kathmandu, Nov. 4:
Stakeholders
concerned with the reconstruction of the Dharhara, expressed their commitment
to provide necessary support in rebuilding the iconic tower built by the first
Prime Minister Bhimsen Thapa in the capital.
Nepal
Telecom, Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Employee Provident Fund (EPF),
Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), Postal Office, Traffic Police, Kathmandu Upatyaka
Khanepani Limited (KUKL) and chairman of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Wart No.
22 have expressed their commitment to reconstructing Dharhara.
At
an interaction programme organised by the National Reconstruction Authority
(NRA), they also exhibited their readiness to offer required support in the
whole reconstruction process.
Manager
of NT Jabinda Lal Upadhyaya said that the company would manage the telephone
lines with the immediate and long-term vision.
Acting
Senior Manager of the EPF Shanta Gautam said that the Fund was ready to open
the way to support Dharhara reconstruction and facilitate the local people.
The
NRA has also said that it would manage the road to provide hassle-free movement
of people.
The
9-storey structure was completely damaged in the devastating Gorkha Earthquake
2015. GIETC-Raman JV is reconstructing the Dharhara at a cost of Rs. 3.45
billion, and the work was started last week.
The
new Dharhara will be a 22-storey tower and extended infrastructure of the tower
that will stand at Sundhara, Kathmandu.
The government has collected about Rs. 80 million under the ‘I will rebuild
my Dharhara’ campaign.
Bhimsen Thapa, the first Prime Minister of modern Nepal, had built the
tower in 1832.
The 9-storey structure had 213 steps in its spiral staircase to the top and
a balcony on the seventh storey.
About 180 people were killed when the Dharhara collapsed after the 7.9
magnitude earthquake brought the tower down. The Dharahara is also known as
Bhimsen Stambha.
