One sided decision on border is unacceptable: PM

Kathmandu, Dec. 18

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the one-sided decision of India on border management would not be accepted.

Sending a written statement on the border dispute to the Supreme Court on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said, "Border issue is the subject that should be resolved with mutual understanding of the two countries. The government does not accept the one-sided decision."

Lawyer Kanchan Krishna Neupane had filed a writ in the court demanding border security.

PM Oli has sent the statement through the Office of the Attorney General in response to the court order made against the writ filed at the court on border dispute with India, including Kalapani region.

He said that the government was always cautions, committed and firm on border security.

"The government is clear about resolving the remaining border issues with mutual discussion with India on the basis of historical facts. One sided decision is not acceptable to us," reads the statement.

It reads that the government was fulfilling its constitutional responsibility as mentioned in the preamble of the Constitution, which mentions that the government has the duty of maintaining national unity, sovereignty and integrity.

According to the PM, as per the 1816 Sugauli Treaty, all land east of Mahakali River including Limpiyadhura, Lipu Lek and Kalapani is the part of Nepal's territory. He said that the government was committed to the border security as per the treaty.

Although India had started deploying its military in early 1960s, fresh disputes aroused after the southern neighbour published a new map, including the Kalapani region in its territory. The government has sent a diplomatic note to the Indian government requesting the latter to make corrections in the map.

PM Oli's response to the court mentions that a committee for the border observation has been formed to support the mechanism established to resolve the border related disputes.

A Cabinet meeting on November 15 this year had formed the committee. The committee has the mandate to submit the field observation report to the mechanism within 3 months.

He said that the government was preparing to mobilise additional Armed Police Force to the border points. He also said that as the government was putting its diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue, there was no need of court order in this regard.
