Minister Gurung instructs NTA to provide sim cards to students free of cost

Kathmandu, Nov. 10

Minister for Communication and Information Technology Parbat Gurung on Tuesday directed Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) to immediately distribute SIM cards free of cost to all school students across the country.

He directed the NTA to distribute the SIM cards to the students free of cost in order to facilitate them in pursuing online education during the coronavirus pandemic.

“The pandemic has forced us to suspend all educational activities in public schools. I request you to prepare a provision to provide free SIM cards to all the students to facilitate them to participate in online education activities,” he said while making an observation trip to the central office of the NTA in Kamaladi.

Meanwhile, he also nudged the telecommunication sector regulator to expand internet services to ward office and health posts.

Minister Gurung pointed towards a need for creating collaboration between the NTA and Nepal Telecom to make the internet service qualitative, cheap and reliable. “The internet is poor even at the Singha Durbar,” he said.

He pledged facilitation in completing the laying of optical fibre across the country. This project is divided into three different packages and currently laying work in Province 1, 2, Bagmati, Karnali and Sudurpaschim has started while the work could not move ahead in Gandaki and Lumbini.
