Kathmandu, Sept. 17
The
Tatopani Dry Port in Larcha of Sindhupalchok district has come into operation
since Friday, informed the Nepal Intermodal Transport Development Board
(NITDB). Following its management by government agencies for some years, it is
now being managed by a private sector company.
"The
construction work of Tatopani Dry Port, which was built in Larcha with the
financial and technical support of the Chinese government, was completed and
was formally handed over to the NITDB on Monday this week," said the NITDB
in a statement.
The
NITBB is responsible for the regulation and management of the cross-border
infrastructures like Inland Container Depots, dry ports, Container Freight
Stations, Integrated Check Posts, and collection and distribution centres.
After
the dry port was transferred to the board, it briefly operated and managed the
trade infrastructure while since 2019 January, it has been operated and managed
by Nepal Transit and Warehousing Company Limited.
The
notice of international tender published on 25 May 2022 was published by the board
to select a terminal management company for the operation and management of the
facility from the private sector.
The
NITDB said in the statement that TransNepal JV, Biratnagar - a joint venture
between TransNepal Freight Services Pvt. Ltd. and Silk Transport Pvt. Ltd., was
selected to run and manage the dry port. A company of the joint venture – Trans
Silk Terminals Pvt. Ltd. will handle the operations at the port for the next
five years.
A
contract for the same was signed on 14 September.
According
to the contract, the company will pay Rs. 117 million in rental fee to the
board.
The
NITDB expressed its belief that operation and management of the dry port by the
private sector will make the business through the facility more swift, fast and
profitable.
