Kathmandu, July 19:
Vice Chairman
of the National Planning Commission (NPC) Dr. Min Bahadur Shrestha has stressed
on the need to focus on actions that bring qualitative differences in the lives
of the people as “we embark on turning the transformative Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) into reality”.
Delivering the national statement, as the leader of
the Nepali delegation, at the
plenary meeting of the 2017 High-Level Political Forum being held at the United
Nations Headquarters, he stated that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development enjoyed strong underpinnings of the country’s constitution.
“He
also underlined the policy initiatives for mainstreaming and localising the
SDGs into its national plans and programmes immediately after the adoption of
the agenda,” read a press statement issued by the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in New York.
Dr.
Shrestha said that despite Nepal’s constraints relating to capacity,
institutions and resources as well as its structural challenges and
vulnerabilities to climate change and natural disasters, the country was
mustering all the strength and relentless efforts in the hope of achieving the
SDGs.
“The
efforts will not be enough, and the current level of global efforts and
partnerships are inadequate,” he said.
Dr.
Shrestha also participated in a side event entitled ‘Fast Tracking Poverty
Eradication and SDGs through the Data Revolution’, co-hosted by Nepal,
Bangladesh (LDC Chair), UNDP and UN Secretariat, among others.
Speaking
at the programme, Dr. Shrestha highlighted the importance of data as well as
challenges facing the LDCs in this regard.
Meanwhile, Bishnu Prasad Lamsal, member-secretary
of the NPC, participated as a panelist in a side event entitled ‘Leave No One
Behind: Ensuring Inclusive SDG Progress’.
