Kathmandu, Oct. 17: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister
for Foreign Affairs Krishna Bahadur Mahara on Tuesday termed the election of
Nepal as a member of the United Nations Asia-Pacific Human Rights Council as
the international community’s support to Nepal’s peace process.
Talking to journalists at his office at Singha Durbar,
DPM Mahara said that by electing Nepal to the UNHRC, the international
community has supported the major provisions on human rights inserted in the Constitution,
Nepal’s commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights and peaceful
conclusion of the peace process.
Nepal was elected on Monday as a member of the UNHRC
with 166 votes, the highest.
Other members elected from the Asia-Pacific regions
are Qatar, Pakistan and Afghanistan. They were elected with 155, 151 and 130
votes respectively.
Four posts in the council will be vacant by the end of
this year.
“This success is the result of Nepal’s efforts for
more than two years. During the UN General Assembly in New York and
Non-Resident Ambassadors Conference in New Delhi, we had urged the
representatives of various nations to support Nepal in its bid for the post,”
DPM Mahara said.
He reiterated the commitment of the government to
cooperate and collaborate with the other nations in human rights promotion as a
member of the council.
According to him, Nepal will try for the post of president
of the Group of 77 and the UN General Assembly.
He appreciated the neighouring and other friendly
nations for their support during the election.
